Structural Beams

Beams are cut from the same cypress as the timber line, but taken as a full square section rather than a board. A 4x4, 6x6 or 8x8 holds its strength in both directions, which is what you want wherever a member carries load on its own rather than as part of a sheeted structure.

4x4 is the common post: verandah and carport uprights, pergola legs, gate posts and the corner posts of timber structures. 6x6 steps up to columns carrying a roof or a floor above, heavier pergola and gazebo frames, and ring beams sitting on block work. 8x8 is the heavy section — main columns, exposed structural work where the beam is meant to be seen, and spans long enough that depth matters more than economy.

Square sections are cut to order from selected logs and sold by the linear foot, so the length is yours to specify. Because the section is heavy and awkward to trim once it is on site, it is worth giving us the finished length rather than cutting down later.
